Specialists are moving into community based care as a result of Government-led reforms. Professor Martin Roland from the National Primary Care Research and Development Centre at the University of Manchester, addresses the issues in the latest Viewpoint.
All our work pursues the seven aims listed below.
1. Use trade union organisation to recruit other managers in all sectors of healthcare, to represent our employment and professional interests with employers and government and to seek fairness and justice at work.
2. Campaign for diversity in healthcare management so we can all reach our full potential – whatever our sex, gender, race, disability, sexual orientation, faith or age.
3. Seek the fullest participation of our members in the work of the union, through innovative networks, communication and democracy.
4. Promote and develop good values, skills and best practice in healthcare management, in the interests of patients and the nation’s health.
5. Explain to the public, the media and other stakeholders the role of management in healthcare, defend ourselves against unfair attack and respond positively to fair criticism.
6. Support the interests and development of other groups of health workers as much as we can.
7. Do what we can to further trade union organisation in this country and overseas.
Most of MiP’s effort goes on the first aim – we have recruited over 1,500 colleagues in our first 18 months. Our professional team has advised and represented hundreds of members faced with serious problems at work, such as job losses and healthcare re-organisation. We constantly go in to see employers and government about our concerns and ideas for better health services. We speak up for managers on key bodies, such as England’s Social Partnership Forum, where ministers meet employers and staff groups to tackle key issues facing healthcare. The section ‘MiP in Your Area’ shows what we get up to in the English regions, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
