As chief executive of MiP, Jon is responsible for the strategy and performance of the union, acts as our lead media spokesperson, negotiates with employers nationally, and works to influence ministers, civil servants and system leaders on behalf of senior health and care managers.

Jon represents MiP members on national NHS forums and working groups, including the national Social Partnership Forum for the NHS in England (chaired by the minister of state for health). Recently he led work on national partnership statements for industrial relations during the pandemic and contributed to reviews of HR, occupational health and health and wellbeing management.

Jon is the staff side co-chair of the NHS Pension Scheme (England and Wales) Scheme Advisory Board (SAB).

Jon  works closely with the MiP’s chair and National Committee. He is accountable to the MiP management board, comprising members of UNISON and FDA executive committees. He also attends UNISON’s health service group executive on behalf of MiP.

He takes a special interest in leadership development, particularly line management, and has tutored programmes for middle managers. Throughout his career, Jon has developed particular expertise in pensions and strategic development and worked to improve workplace culture and diversity.

In 2021 Jon became a non-executive director of the Workforce Development Trust.

Jon was MiP’s first member of staff when the organisation was founded in 2005. Before that, he worked as a national officer for the Association of Teachers and Lecturers (now part of the National Education Union), responsible for looking after members working in private schools, and as a negotiator for the FDA, where his wide-ranging remit covered members in the civil service, the NHS, the Houses of Parliament and museums.

Jon loves food, history and fitness. “I’m always seeking out ways to improve myself,” he says. “My latest thing is training for my first half marathon.”

The Lucy Letby case demands a comprehensive and thoughtful response. Statutory regulation of managers may be a part of that, but won't be a quick fix. Right now, we need to tackle a culture that deters staff, patients and the public from raising concerns about NHS care.

We need to challenge the widely-held belief that all-powerful managers are blocking change in the NHS. It's a lack of empathy for the difficult choices and hard realities that managers face which is holding us back.
