MiP urges members to engage with consultation on NHSE/I merger

NHS England and NHS Improvement published their consultation document on the effective merger of the two organisations on 16 July. Here’s MiP’s response and advice to members who may be affected by the re-organisation.

The consultation process on the effective merger between NHS England and NHS Improvement opens on 16 July. We’re urging all MiP members in both organisations to engage with the consultation both individually and collectively through MiP.

Hundreds of MiP members will be affected by the effective merger of the two organisations, as seven regional structures and 11 corporate directorates are integrated over the next five months. This effective merger is a result of decisions made to reduce costs in the NHS, which have led to serious cuts across both organisations.

The trade unions met with management on 11 July to try and agree a start date for the opening of this consultation. Management were not able to provide all the information the unions needed in order to make an informed decision to endorse the proposed start date of 16 July. As a result of this, the unions were not able to endorse the start date, and requested that it be delayed until 24 July, by which time more information would be available. The consultation, however, was still launched on 16 July.

As a consequence of this, MiP did not see the published version of the consultation until it was sent to members on the launch day. We have not yet had the chance to scrutinise the final consultation document, and will need to examine it thoroughly over the next few days in order identify the support and representation our members are likely to need. We will then be better placed to to advise you on how the process is likely to affect you.

It is the employer’s responsibility to run the consultation effectively and fairly and MiP still intends to engage fully with the consultation. We strongly encourage all of our members to do the same on an individual level and collectively through us as your trade union.
