Trade unions are at their most effective when members feel involved. Being active on behalf of MiP in your workplace or through a workplace joint union campaign or as a MiP national committee member, you are contributing towards making our workplaces better. Thank you.

As health managers with high and stressful workloads, we know being active in your union is another commitment but how much you do depends on you. It can be putting up a poster, attending a local meeting, encouraging others to join to deciding to become a workplace representatives or being on the national committee.

Participation is also about feeling informed about MiP activities and having your views taken in to account on campaigns and issues. MiP organises opportunities for involving members throughout the year. MiP organises local meetings, our national annual Summit, regional events as well as the regular member surveys through the weekly email to members.

We are keen for members to influence and advise through the National Committee. Members are elected by the whole membership to serve two-year terms on the 16-member body which helps to develop policy and campaigns, and influences the running of the union. If you might be interested in joining the Committee, please take a look at the Our Governance page and contact us for further information.

Also across the UK, MiP’s network of link members and representatives help to deliver our campaigns, services and casework.

Link members’ and representatives’ roles vary depending on individuals’ preferences and situations, but their work can include:

  • Acting as the main workplace contact between national officers, head office, and MiP members within a team or organisation;
  • Explaining and promoting the union’s policies and services, and helping to recruit new members;
  • Liaising with staffside bodies and other unions, including our partner union UNISON;
  • Helping local members to access advice, information and representation, and offering informal support.

Both link members and reps receive extensive training, and work closely with MiP’s national officers – who provide advice, guidance and support.

If you want to know more about getting involved in MiP, contact Helen Carr, Head of Operations.
