National Health Bodies & Professional Organisations

MiP has a large membership within the national government bodies that oversee health and care delivery in England, and the associations and professional bodies that represent health organisations and professionals across the UK. We also serve managers within national regulators and inspectorates in the devolved administrations of Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

In England, we are particularly well represented within NHS England, Public Health England and the NHS Improvement family of organisations, and we also have strong networks within NHS Digital, Health Education England, the Care Quality Commission and the National Institute for Clinical Excellence. Outside government, we have many members in health sector associations, professional institutes, clinical unions and think tanks.

Across these organisations, we represent a huge range of senior staff – from strategists, regulators and policymakers, through to senior executives, and corporate services managers such as HR, IT and communications staff.

We support health managers through our network of national officers, each of whom is responsible for representing members within a particular region or nation

Our officers divide their time between providing members with individual representation on particular HR issues, and collective representation. In this latter role, they work with employers to improve staff salaries, terms & conditions, HR processes and the management of change programmes – both within national health bodies and professional organisations, and through the policies and processes governing the wider health and care system.

For example, MiP has seats on the Partnership Forums that bring together employers and unions within NHS England, NHS Improvement, NHS Digital and several other bodies. We also belong to the Organisational Change Group at NHS England, working to ensure that mergers, redundancy schemes and other major change programmes are well managed and respect the rights of every employee.

On pay, we represent executives and senior managers within the consultation processes run by the Department of Health and Senior Salaries Review Body, giving expert evidence and providing recommendations.

MiP constantly works to address diversity and equalities issues within these organisations and across the wider health and care sector. We were instrumental in developing the Women’s Network inside NHS England, and play a key role in many system-wide equalities forums and committees.

Agenda for Change, introduced 20 years ago, was supposed to put an end to inconsistency and unfairness in how NHS staff are paid. But staff shortages and tight budgets mean many staff are now graded below the level of the work they’re doing. It’s time to modernise the system, says Rhys McKenzie.
